Sir Nicholas Winton - A true British hero
A British man who saved 669 children, most of them Jews, from the Nazis is to receive the Czech Republic's highest state honour.

Sir Nicholas Winton was 29 when he arranged trains to take the children out of occupied Czechoslovakia and for foster families to meet them in London.

Now 105, he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme he felt proud that he had "made a difference to a lot of people".

If that's what you think I said, you need to stop working on your nationalism and start working on your national language.

I was a compliment and an expression of gratitude, take it as such.

Haha, the bloke that can't help mentioning Canada, tells me to stop working on nationalism

Look, I mentioned Andrew Mynarski, one of you heroes the other day, but I didn't say whatever nationality he was, he's still a hero, I said that he was Canadian and that's how Nicholas Winton should be seen

HTH

"I said that he was Canadian and that's how Nicholas Winton should be seen"

But Winton is not Canadian.

If you are trying say he should be remember as British, that's wrong. Mynarski should be remembered for what he did not from where he was from, just like Winton. Naturally people of various nations will highlight people close to them because that is what they experience. But you can't tell me that I can't think of Winton as a true hero, which is what you just did as part of this weird crusade you guys have.

Start a new thread if you want but leave this for the appreciation it was meant to be.

Re: Sir Nicholas Winton - A true British hero
Not true

Kemal Ataturk is a national Turkish hero, he's not a hero in any other country is he?

Re: Sir Nicholas Winton - A true British hero
You are really struggling and know full well that a being a national hero and hero from a nation are different things.

In most Turkish eyes, Ataturk made Turkey, (the clue is in his name) and helped a lot of Turks, making him a national hero.

Winton did not save British people or the British nation. He was a real hero who was British. I am not sure why that is offensive, being a hero to more people than just one nation is better, is it not?

669 children!! Wow.

Think about the lives that would never have happened if those children had died. Would be many, many thousands now.

Far Cough 5:29 Tue Oct 28
Re: Sir Nicholas Winton - A true British hero
Yes it is better but as per you, you try to dilute Winton's heroics based on your own nationalistic tendencies

Ok last word to you

Sorry Eddie

We are all jumping the gun here.

He saved all those kids but we need to do a survey of the descendants of those kids and work out the balance of good/evil done by them. Then we judge.

At the very least we need to be sure his actions didn't result in Daniel Levy before we chuck the word hero at him.

It's good that there were people of his ilk back in the day. One wonders what an equivalent act these days would result in.

What a life he's had. Extraordinary.

Re: Sir Nicholas Winton - A true British hero
Those were better days to be a modest unassuming hero. No phone tapping journos, no book deals, no honey traps and nobody thrusting a mic in front of you and teasing out a politically incorrect utterance.

Blimey, some people on here could start an argument in an empty room.
